The basics

What are HIV and AIDS?

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) attacks the body's immune system. Without treatment, HIV can damage the immune system over time.

AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is the most advanced stage of HIV infection. Not everyone with HIV develops AIDS. Effective treatment helps people with HIV live long, healthy lives.

HIV is not spread by everyday contact such as hugging, sharing food, or using the same toilet. It can be prevented, tested for, and treated.

Care changes lives

HIV treatment can reduce the amount of virus in the body to an undetectable level. When a person maintains an undetectable viral load, they do not sexually transmit HIV (U=U).
